At Mitchell Grove, couples often ask how to prepare for unexpected weather. While Humboldt County weddings are usually blessed with mild, beautiful days — rarely climbing above the 70s and often staying lush and green throughout the summer — rain can still make a surprise appearance.
Most couples view a tent as affordable rain insurance. This October wedding is a great example. The couple rented a 20’ x 40’ tent from The Party Place, and it fit comfortably on the lawn in front of the gazebo, allowing the indoor space of the hall to be used for the reception without having to turn the room over.
Ironically, tents are often rented for rain but end up being appreciated just as much for shade. Either way, having one in place can provide peace of mind during a family-run wedding weekend.
Traditionally, May and October are the months most likely to bring showers, but in recent years we’ve seen surprises in June and even August. Because tent inventory can be limited during wedding season, couples should consider their comfort level with weather risk early in the planning process.
A few things to keep in mind when planning a tent at Mitchell Grove:
• If rain is in the forecast, the lawn in front of the gazebo is where the tent is typically placed.
• Tents must be secured with water barrels. Stakes are not permitted.
• Tents must be commercial-grade and installed by professionals who carry insurance.
This may sound strict, but it comes from a good place. We’ve hosted quite a few weddings in the rain at Mitchell Grove, and experience has taught us what works best for both safety and guest comfort.
