Every season at Mitchell Grove has its own kind of beauty. Spring brings fresh green growth, summer offers long evenings under the redwoods, fall brings golden light, and even our cooler months have a quiet charm. If you’re traveling from out of the area—or even from another country—we wanted to share a few local travel tips to help your trip go as smoothly as possible.
Flying into Humboldt, California
Some of our traveling guests fly into Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV), which is located in McKinleyville. There are regular flights between San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Arcata (ACV).
Because both airports are affected by coastal fog, delays and cancellations are not uncommon. In Humboldt, fog often rolls in during the early morning and again in the evening, while San Francisco can experience similar conditions. We recommend building some flexibility into your travel plans, especially if arriving a few days before the wedding isn’t possible. If you have some flexibility in your flight times, arriving around midday often helps you avoid the worst of the fog.
Getting Around:
Uber is available in Humboldt County, but unlike larger cities, drivers may not always be nearby or immediately available.Rental cars are available at the airport, but availability can be limited. We recommend reserving your vehicle well in advance to ensure one is ready when you arrive.
If You Get Stranded:
Occasionally, flights arrive late after transportation options have become limited. If you find yourself without an Uber, rental car, or taxi, the Holiday Inn Express is located about three miles from the airport. The hotel also offers accessible guest rooms for travelers with mobility or hearing considerations.
If you have a reservation there, the hotel provides an airport shuttle. Even if you don’t have a room booked, if the airport is closing and you’re temporarily stranded, the staff will often do their best to help. Depending on availability and the staff on duty, they may be willing to pick you up and let you wait comfortably in the lobby while you arrange transportation or lodging. While this isn’t something they can guarantee, it’s a kindness we’ve seen them extend many times.
