What DIY Wedding Planning Really Looks Like: A Map, A Plan, and Fewer Questions

June 10, 2026 Weddings

A groom recently sent us this aerial planning map for his upcoming wedding at Mitchell Grove.

At first glance, it looks like a simple diagram.

But we think it illustrates something important about DIY weddings.

There’s a common misconception that DIY means “winging it.”

In reality, the most successful DIY weddings are often the most thoughtfully planned.

Looking at this map, you can see that every part of the day has been considered:

  • Ceremony location
  • Reception tables
  • Happy hour area
  • Bar placement
  • Dance floor
  • Buffet
  • Dessert station
  • Photo booth
  • Band setup

None of these decisions happened by accident.

The couple took the time to think through how guests would move through the space, where people would gather, and how each part of the celebration would connect to the next.

That’s what we see over and over again at Mitchell Grove.

The couples who thrive in a DIY setting aren’t looking for someone else to design their wedding for them. They have a vision of their own. What they need is a venue that gives them the flexibility to bring that vision to life.

One of the things we love about this planning map is how practical it is.

A simple overhead image can help family members, vendors, wedding parties, and volunteers understand the plan at a glance. It reduces confusion, answers questions before they arise, and helps everyone work from the same playbook.

If you’re planning a DIY wedding, consider creating a map like this one.

It doesn’t have to be fancy.

A screenshot, a few labels, and a rough layout can go a long way toward making the wedding day run smoothly.

The best DIY weddings aren’t unplanned.

They’re thoughtfully planned by people who know exactly what kind of experience they want to create.
