The apple blossoms are lovely. Spring weather is unpredictable.
Every spring, couples ask whether they can time a wedding at Mitchell Grove to coincide with the apple blossoms. It’s an enchanting idea, but the timing doesn’t quite line up with our wedding season: we don’t host weddings in April, and our season runs from May through October.
The apple trees usually bloom in March or April, though the timing changes from year to year. By most May weddings, the petals have fallen and the orchard is filling in with green leaves.
Early May can still feel like spring on the North Coast. NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Eureka show an average daily high of about 60°F in May, with about 1.66 inches of precipitation during the month. Those are averages, not a forecast for any particular date, and conditions at the grove can differ from the Eureka station.
Rain can leave the ground damp even after the skies clear. We need the site to be dry enough to prepare the orchard and get everything ready for a wedding. A sunny forecast for the wedding day doesn’t necessarily mean the ground will be ready for setup.
The orchard is beautiful beyond blossom season: fresh and green in spring, full of ripening apples later in summer, and glowing in autumn light.
